2 – Get an Energy audit
You can save the most of the energy if you look for where you are wasting it. Many Electrical companies provide free energy audits and locate your hidden energy leakages.
According to the Department of Energy, simply sealing cracks could reduce your heating and cooling bills by up to 20%. You may even be in one of the many lucky states that also pays for repairs. (Fair warning – we may be moving in next door) Just in case you’re not able to find a free energy audit, a DIY energy audit is a good start.
3 – Save Paper and Ink
One thing 2020 has taught us is that the world will eventually shift online. Saving paper and ink would have sounded weird back then but now we are doing it eventually.
Always choose to use less paper and ink, try to work more on soft copies (pdf documents, word docs etc) other than going for the hard copies (printed papers). Saving paper would not only save your paper, it will also save the energy required in running photocopy machines, printers, fax machines etc.
Moreover, change the trend of using paper cups for drinking water or coffee, and encourage your staff members to bring reusable ones. Purchase post-consumer waste (PCW) paper, paper products and packaging. Did you know only products labeled 100% PCW are 100% recycled? Making PCW recycled paper uses 45% less energy and creates half the waste of the traditional papermaking process.
4 – Get Green Vendors!
Going green may not be easy for you to implement, so you should let somebody else do it for you. Choose vendors who are eco-friendly, for example check your supply chain and find out what percentage of companies you are working with, eco-friendly. Try to avoid shipping costs and choose food supply providers to be locally available in your surroundings.
A really easy choice you may not know about is green web hosting. Data servers use up huge amounts of energy! Green web hosts offset their energy consumption by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that pay for renewable energy projects.
They cost about the same as traditional hosts, and you get the peace of mind of knowing you’re supporting renewable energy. This is how you get green coverage and benefits for making your environment energy efficient.
5 – Shift to LED Lights!
Switching your business to LED bulbs will make your business more energy efficient, as with the latest innovation in LED technology and revised prices, if you calculate your cost on a long run, you’ll realise the amount of money you’d save from it. LED bulbs lats 10 to 25 times longer than halogen bulbs and 10 times longer than CFLs.
Many companies offer cash flow positive financing (you pay them back with part of your savings) so you’ll save money as soon as you flip the switch!
